Biography

Hello!

I am very happy to be part of BCHS for my third year. This year I will be teaching Grade 7 Language Arts to my homeroom class of 7-1, as well as Band to all our music students.

I grew up on a farm near Athabasca, and studied music from a young age. After  graduating from Edwin Parr Composite, I attended The University of Western Ontario where I earned a Bachelor of Music and a Bachelor of Education. I got my first teaching position with Pembina Hills 20 years ago and have taught at R.F. Staples, Jarvie, Clyde and Fawcett schools. I have also taught music privately for many years to people of all ages and abilities, including working with children in Music Therapy through Westlock Elementary School. Working as a music festival adjudicator is another wonderful experience that has made me grow as a teacher.

The best thing about my career is that it combines many of my passions - literature, music and young people. It has allowed me to be creative in programing concerts, to perform in exciting places like Ottawa, Vancouver, Edmonton, and Cuba, and to work with some amazing people. SING! is a vocal group that I started in 2007 in Westlock which gives young singers an opportunity to receive vocal training and performance opportunities. We are in our eighth season this year, and working with these amazing singers is a thrill for me.

Besides my life as a teacher, I am also a mom to four children. So, I also have a parent's perspective when it comes to school. Please feel free to call me (780-349-3568) or email kerri-lee.kostiw@phrd.ab.ca anytime!
